Los Altos, California, uses Pitasche Trees for landscaping and every fall and winter our gallery has a huge mess to deal with clearing off leaves and berries from the sidewalks.  But they do attach yellow-rumped warblers by the dozens among other birds.    This painting is 10″ x 10″ watercolor on wood panel.

Looking Sharp

My parents have black-capped chickadees and a downy woodpecker frequenting their yard and I can count of seeing them when I visit Ohio.    In this painting I wanted the three birds to be reacting to something outside the painting frame.  This is a small 10″ x 10″ watercolor on a wood panel.  I am working on a series of six of these panels, all with common perching birds.

Our Allied Artist West group is presenting a painting exhibit at the Presentation Center in Los Gatos, California.  We spent a lovely afternoon painting at this retreat and conference center and were treated to a delicious lunch.  I was most taken with the amphitheater built in a redwood grove bordering the small lake.  It spoke of peace and contemplation and I wanted to project a feeling of tranquility in this painting titled ‘Inspiration’.  The exhibit will run from January 18 through March.

Burrowing Owls

We were on a quest today to find a burrowing owl reported living near the Sunnyvale Baylands.  No luck.  But these owls have been on my mind.  We saw a half dozen last spring in Ecuador high up in the mountains and we used to see them fairly regularly near my husband’s office in Mountain View.  They are very expressive and lots of fun to paint.

For this painting I had in mind the owls we saw in Ecuador which were hanging around some low shrubs.  More often though we see them in the open on bare ground and I tried to get that feeling in this little painting.

Sparrows

Song sparrows have become like old friends when we visit the baylands and now, with the cold weather, our yard is full of White-crowned Sparrows.  I have been thinking about how beautiful these somewhat drab birds are.  Here are two song sparrows and one white-crowned sparrow.
